- Microcomputer
- Personal Computers designed for an individual user. Also referred to as a PC or Personal
Computer.
- Microfilm
- Pages of print are photographically reduced and produced on reels of film or microfiche
sheets.
- Microfloppy disk
- A 3.5" plastic flexible disk in an unsealed, hard plastic jacket. Usually referred
to as a floppy disk.
- Microphone (as computer input)
- An input device enabling sounds to be directly inputed into the computer.
- Microsoft Disk Operating System (MS-DOS)
- Microwave Transmission
- A microwave communications channel transmits high frequency radio waves that travel
through the air in straight lines.
- MIDI (
See Musical instrument digital interface.)
- MIME (
See Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions )
- Minicomputer
- Computers developed as specialised mainframes.
- MIP mapping (3D image technologies)
- Stores several sizes of a texture map, so that moving closer to a image will maintain
the textures clarity.
- Mirrored Hard Disk
- Two drives share a disk controller and are maintained as identical copies of each other.
- Mode
- either digital or analog data communications
- Model (spreadsheet)
- A set of values, macros and formulae, which together form a spreadsheet application.
- Modem
- a device used to send and receive data via a standard analogue telephone line. Stands
for Modulator-Demodulator.
- Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM)
- An early Hard Disk Controller.
- Modulation
- converts signals from a DTE in digital form, to an analog form
- Monochrome Display Adaptor (MDA) (
See Display Adaptors.)

- Motorola
- A Personal Computer (PC) Chip manufacturer, primarily used in Apple Computers.
- Mouse
- A device which can be moved over a surface and the cursor position on the screen of a
VDU is moved correspondingly.
- Mouse Pointer
- Indicates the current mouse position.
- Mousepoint
- A pointing device which protrudes between the keyboard keys. Moving will cause the
cursor position on the screen of a VDU to be moved correspondingly
- MPLS (
See Multiprotocol label switching )
- MS-DOS (
see Microsoft Disk Operating System.)
- Multimedia
- links text, graphics, video or sound
- Multipartite virus
- infect both executable files and boot sectors.
- Multiplexor
- Multiplexors are devices that allow the combination of several data channels
independently into one physical circuit.
- Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS)
- An IEFT initiative that integrates layer 2 information about nework links
(bandwith, latency, utilisation) into layer 3 (IP) to simplify and improve
IP packet exchange.
- Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME)
- (Internet WWW) Developed as a way to attach files to email and define the document type
using extensions - .TXT, .HTML, and so on - and definitions - for example

simultaneously.
- Musical instrument digital interface (MIDI)
- Serial data transmission protocol for transporting musical information between
