4GL's in a DBMS

Many "business" 4GL's use a Data Base Management System (DBMS) as their core file manager.

The 4GL is the application development environment that accesses the DBMS.

and may contain;

• Form generation tools - for data maintenance
• Report generation tools - to produce information from the DBMS eg. Crystal reports
• Query languages eg. SQL.
• Menu generation tools - to link forms and reports
• Help facilities - enabling operator help to be generated.
• Program Generator - enabling non-procedural (WHAT rather than HOW) access and manipulation of the DBMS.

These tools are designed to be used by both programmer and end-user.
