People overview

[cartoon - mobile computer user]

"People are your single most important asset."

  • Ed Yourdon

People who use the computers are classified as end-users (or just users)

People are the reason we have computers in the first place - to make us more productive!!

The systems analyst must not view the user as some-one for whom the system is being built, the end user is an integral component of any system.

Many types of people benefit from computer use;

  • Clientele - benefit from the computer
  • Users (or end-users) - use the computer as a tool
  • Operations - run the computer
  • Systems development - Programmers and analysts
  • Training - Tutors, Manual writers (Documentation), Multimedia developers (computer based books)

I will classify them into two groups;

  • End-users and
  • Information Technology Professionals

End Users (personnel involved in IT)

A person who uses a microcomputer or has access to large computers.

[Computer end-user]

Examples of end users include;

accountants, personal assistants, managers, graphic artists, musicians, engineers, technicians, user support, programmers, systems designer/analysts, operators, network administrators, sales

Real Users

We've heard about real programmers - a legendary breed that scoffs at sleep, scorns documentation and reads object code with the naked eye. But what of the lesser mortals who must make use of programs that real programmers write. They're called Real Users, and make Real programmers' lives hell, ... and this is how to spot one:
