Employed by computer bureaus, companies with large computer installations and businesses with large numbers of networked microcomputer users.
Key Tasks
Responsible for maintaining the efficient and effective operation of a computing network.
Provide on site assistance to computer users in relation to networking matters.
Administer the operation of a computer network by maintaining network security and integrity.
Connect new users and care for existing users.
Monitor the use of the network, identify any bottlenecks, and plan for network expansion.
Carry out network server "housekeeping" tasks, such as deleting users who no longer require access, providing data backup services, installing network applications and scanning for possible virus attack.
Research and test new computer networking equipment and software to judge its suitability for use within the organisation.
Liaise with help desk and user support staff to provide timely solutions to user problems.
Personal Qualities
Able to liaise with a wide community of computing users. Outgoing personality, able to relate to a variety of people, enthusiastic, self motivated, persistent and confident. Need to be able to show initiative, persistence and have good working habits. Need to be able to organise the workload and work under pressure and with minimal supervision. Need to be a clear logical thinker. Able to follow a problem through to its solution. An enjoyment of teamwork is an advantage.
Entry Requirements
Most organisations require a tertiary qualification in business computing or some experience with operation of a PC in a networked environment.
Training
Tertiary qualifications gained at Polytechnic in electronics or business computing provide entry level requirements. Qualifications from a network supplier (such as Novell or Microsoft) becoming a basic requirement. Experience with operation of networked PCs and associated software.
Prospects
Move from network administrator to network management. Computer related management and own business.
