1959 First mini-computer PDP-1 (DEC)

1961 IBM begins working on the System 360 family of computer systems
Telstar - a communications satellite was launched

Software

Beginning of interactive processing;

Real time processing (eg. Airline reservations)

Time sharing (Bureau facilities)

COBOL (Common Business-Oriented Language) designed. Sponsored by the US Department of Defence.

BASIC (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction code) developed

PL/1 (Programming Language 1) to replace both FORTRAN and COBOL developed by IBM.

Introduction of Operating Systems

Data

Magnetic tape main form of storage

Transaction Processing using paper and processed by the Data Processing (DP) department.

People

Trained personnel in a DP department enter data, and generate reports.

IBM introduces a transistorised computer, the IBM 1401

1960

Grace Hopper and others design the COBOL programming language

 

Digital Equipment Corporation introduce the PDP-1, the first minicomputer

 

The Rand Corporation develops the first interactive computing system

1961

IBM begins working on the System 360 family of computer systems

1962

IBM and American Airlines develop the SABRE reservation system

1963

John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz develop the BASIC programming language.

 

IBM begins to design the PL/1 programming language
