Features

  • Television uses analog signal. Computer digital signal (non-continuous).
  • To enable video to be handled on a computer requires digital compression (to store video) and decompression (to display video) technologies (CODEC's - COmpression / DECompression) include; Video for Windows (Microsoft), INDEO (Intel), MPEG Decoder for Windows (Xing Technology)
  • Full motion full screen video at 30 frames per second (fps) using software will require a minimum of a Pentium 90.
  • Typically PC video is saved at 15 fps.
Issues
  • Palettes
    • Palette problems with older 256 colour displays.
  • Speed
    • Frames per second: In the USA NTSC TV runs at 30 fps. Computer video is usually 15 fps. (PAL runs at 25fps)
Troubleshooting
  • Capturing from the net
    • Rightmouse the video and Save As
    • If Quicktime or RealAudio where the producers have save disabled, stop the file after it downloads and before it stopsplaying, then look for the file in cache.

Main formats
  • Audio Video Interleave (AVI)
    • Audio and video Interleaved - standard Windows file (specified 1990).
    • Uses about 1MB per second for the size shown left. (move mouse over to display)

  • MPEG ( Motion Picture Experts Group)

    • MPEG2 is a video compression standard, though like Apples MOV files is ideally suited to sound recordings.
    • MPEG-3 was designed to support high definition TV but this was supported by MPEG-2 (Hence MP3 was used for a sound format).
    • MPEG-4 is being worked on to allow users to manipulate audio & video (as far as I can determine to allow for interactive/multimedia movies).
