Multimedia is steadily shifting onto the internet. As modem speeds increaase and connection charges decrease more and more multimedia applications are shifting onto the internet.
CD-ROM (and DVD) based encyclopedias are struggling to keep pace with the up-to-date cousins on the internet, and most now provide an update service that is internet (web) based.
Re-usable materials are still better on CD-ROM, such as learning materials on specific topics that change infrequently, such as Art History.
Changable material such as encyclopedias will progressively shift onto the internet, and users will be charged an access fee (eg. Encyclopedia Briticannica on-line)
