IT - Multimedia futures

  • Multimedia is steadily shifting onto the internet. As modem speeds increaase and connection charges decrease more and more multimedia applications are shifting onto the internet.
  • CD-ROM (and DVD) based encyclopedias are struggling to keep pace with the up-to-date cousins on the internet, and most now provide an update service that is internet (web) based.
  • Re-usable materials are still better on CD-ROM, such as learning materials on specific topics that change infrequently, such as Art History.
  • Changable material such as encyclopedias will progressively shift onto the internet, and users will be charged an access fee (eg. Encyclopedia Briticannica on-line)
