The general features of all systems are identical, all systems can be considered in these terms.

- To achieve this they interact with their environment to obtain necessary materials
- To keep functioning they must be under control

- Manufacturing systems are themselves subsystems within the organisation
- Manufacturing systems are made up of subsystems
