OCR reader:

  • May be a scanner used to read magnetic characters, as in a cheque or
  • May be a scanner designed to recognise single characters either type written or handwritten. This is used to read addresses on envelopes in automatic postal sorting systems.

  • Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR): used on cheques etc
Features
  • Characters are created in a particular type style which can be read by humans and OC readers.
  • Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) characters of a particular style readable by humans and made of iron oxide are passed through a strong magnetic field to become magnetised and then under a read head so that the data can be transferred to the computer
