Variations

  • MS Intellimouse released Nov 96. A small grey wheel poking out between the two buttons. In software designed to use the wheel, it can be used to;
    • Scroll:
      Roll or press the Wheel and move the mouse to quickly scroll through documents, spreadsheets and Web pages. Use the AutoScroll feature to automatically scroll your text hands-free!
    • Zoom:
      The CTRL key and the IntelliMouse Wheel combine for quick zooming action. Reduce or increase the size of your text in one simple step.

Interaction

  • Moving the mouse over a flat surface, rotates a ball that turns a set of rollers (sensing up and down ).
  • This data is then sent over the mouse cable through a serial port (usually).
  • The CPU is sent the data. If the software is set to detect mouse movement, the appropriate movement commands are sent to the VDU.
  • If a button is pressed and the software is set to detect a button click (or double click), the CPU will interpret the action required. (Eg. A single click may place the text cursor at the current mouse position).
