Definition

An input peripheral device which contains a sphere on its underside, that can be moved over a surface and the cursor position on the screen of a VDU is moved correspondingly. One or more buttons can be used to specify the current cursor position on the VDU or make selections from menus or data.

Use

  • A device which can be moved over a surface and the cursor position on the screen of a VDU is moved correspondingly
  • Originally used for Graphics, and CAD work, but now Software developers are using the Mouse as a flexible tool for interaction with programs.
  • An integral part of systems based on Windows, or the Windows metaphor (such as OS/2).

Features

  • They may contain one button (standard on the Apple computers), two buttons (standard for IBM / MS-Windows or OS/2 PC's) or three buttons (PC mouse, used in CAD).
  • Often used with a mouse pad, to improve tracking.
  • Reports all sliding motion
  • Reports when buttons are pressed and when they are released.
  • Does not like cheese!
