Magnetic tape - Qic & Travan

QIC Tape format

  • Use 1/4" mini-cartridge from the DC-2000 family.
  • Qic-40 and Irwin-40Mb drives still the most common.
  • Qic-80 and 80/120Mbyte Irwins are becoming more common with larger Hard Disks being purchased.
  • Qic-3010 drives go from 340MB to 800 MB
  • Qic-3020 drives go from 680MB to 1.6GB

Travan tape format

  • Uses
    • High performance backup for desktop, servers and workstations.
  • Features
    • Capacities from 3.2GB to 20GB (Seagate Aug 98)
    • Redesign of the basic Qic minicartridge
    • Joint initiative between Hewlett-Packard and 3M.
    • The tape cartridge is slightly larger than Qic, enabling Travan drives to remain compatible with Qic tapes, while approximately doubling the tape length.
    • Tapes match Qic-wide format.
    • In the Qic-80 class (120Mb uncompressed) will be able to hold 400MB (800 MB compressed).
    • All Travan drives will state capacities in uncompressed terms.
