Magnetic tape - Advanced intelligent tape (AIT)

hwtaped8.gif (6921 bytes)
Uses
  • High performance backup for mid-range servers.
  • Typically characterized by systems that support 2 to 129 users in a commercial environment.

Features

  • Capacities up to 200GB.
  • Advanced Lossless Data Compression (ALDC) technology from IBM
  • Memory in cassette (MIC) - a 16kbit EPROM mounted within the data cartridge, includes a 5-pin interface to the drive. This enables the AIT drive to store and retrieve data directly from the chip. The information stored includes a combination of drive and user generated information.
    • Advantages of MIC are:
      • Faster access to data
      • Better reliability through predicative diagnosis of media degredation
      • Faster and more reliable access to volume serial information
      • Better data set management through use of user-specific volume and partition notes
      • Greater data integrity through a fault-tolerant system
  • Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) is the tape formulation used by AIT. Key characteristics include 100% pure cobalt magnetic layer, dual magnetic layer design, the absence of binder material to prevent tape head contamination and DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) protective coating for extreme durability.
    • The DLC coating is a carbon protective layer that approaches the hardness of diamond. This protective layer is in the order of nanometres and dramatically improves the abrasion resistance and overall tape durability. The increased durability and additional surface oxidation production results in a low initial error rate and an extended recording life.
