This page deals with network facilities including;
  • Point to point
  • Multidrop/multipoint
  • Switched
  • Packet switched
  • Digital data networks (DDN)

[Point-to-point]

Point to point

Examples

Multidrop/multipoint

  • Links more than two stations at one time.
  • One station needs to be designated as the control or master station or each station needs to monitor the cable to see if the cable is in use.

Example

  • Bus network.

Switched

nwfsw.gif (4109 bytes)

  • Allows a single station to connect to other stations.
  • In the case of an analog telephone line once the switch is made the connection becomes point to point until the connection is dropped.

Example

  • Modem communications through a telephone system.

Packet switched

nwfsw.gif (4109 bytes)

  • A data network containing intelligent switching nodes. Stations send data to the Data switching exchange (DSE). This data is then cut into equal length packets with a destination header, and sent to another DSE.

Example

  • PACnet. A digital network operated by Telecom.
