  • High specification computer often linked to a file server.
  • Used by engineers, Scientists, requiring the processing of large amounts of data, usually graphical.
  • Sophisticated display screens, high resolution colour/graphics
  • Often running Windows NT or UNIX
  • Intel based workstations (1998)
    • Dual high end processors
    • 128-512MB RAM
    • High speed SCSI drives
    • High end 3D graphics cards (costing approx $4,500)
    • Run multi-threaded applications (use multiple processors).

        • Up to 2 x 450 MHz PII MMX, up to 28GB Hard Disk,
      • (Jan 99) Silicon graphics 540 starts at $14,875
        • Up to 4 x Xeon processors.
