Data processing overview

Data Processing (DP) Systems are applications that manage the acquisition, storage, manipulation and retrieval of data and is main use of computers today.
All businesses process data, and computers are used for the repetitive tasks, such as managing finance (Debtors, Payroll, etc).
In large organisations huge numbers of transactions that require sorting, organising and referencing mean processing is carried out on a large scale.

Data Processing is done at every level in an organisation, using a variety of software they are able to draw together data into meaningful patterns;
  • Using a Management information system (MIS) front line employees process day to day transactions
  • Using a decision support systems (DSS) supervisors monitor and correct the days events
  • Using Executive information systems (EIS) middle management set and monitor goals, and top management set out the strategic plan for the organisation.
  • Using expert systems technicians can analyse or diagnose problems,
  • Using simulation and modelling, products can be developed and tested.
