Magnetic tape use

Data processing | Secondary storage

However, use of magnetic tape, either full size, or data cartridge, is common for copies of files (backup, archive) or files which are used sequentially and then only seldom.
This latter is because though slow, they are much cheaper per byte of storage than disk, and there is not so much restriction on space. (Even the biggest fixed disk has an upper limit, but continuation tapes can be put on a drive whenever called for).
