hwhdmx.jpg (15424 bytes)

The purpose of disk storage is to
  • Save data and programs "permanently".
  • Allows for direct (random) and sequential access of the data and programs.
  • Enable high speed access of files (relative to tape storage).

Uses for disk storage include;

  • Holding data files such as Word processing documents, graphics, video, sound, database etc.
  • Holding program files such as applications like word-processing, spreadsheet, database, accounting, etc.
  • Removable disks can be used to transport files and backup files.
  • Disks may be used as "Virtual storage" supplementing RAM (internal storage). (Eg. OS/2 or Windows)
