Bar coding - Short, Instore and coupon numbers

Short numbers

  • Some articles are too small to carry a complete standard sized symbol on them. These use NZPN-8.
  • These numbers are allocated by the NZPNA and are allocated as required, and do not directly identify the manufacturer or product.
  • UPC-E in the USA
    (short product code) has 6 number characters representing 7 digits. A check digit is generated using A and B as follows:- (refer to notes on EAN for A and B number sets)

In-store Numbering & coupons

Many stores have weighing machines for meat, produce etc, which print barcode labels.
The label will usually bear price, weight and description of goods in a human readable form and usually barcode 13 bits (a 5 digit product number with 4 digit price, and a country code usually set to "02", and an additional check bit).

Coupons also are coded with country code of "99".
