The Australian Product Number (APN) code was developed as a subset of EAN
for use in 1978.

Computing the check digit is as follows;

The check digit verifies all preceding digits according to the following algorithm; (use diagram above)
| Step | Action | Example |
| 1 | Add up digits in the even positions | 3+2+4+6+8+0 =23 |
| 2 | Multiply result by 3 | 23 * 3 = 69 |
| 3 | Add digits in odd positions | 9+1+3+5+7+9 = 34 |
| 4 | Add steps 2 and 3 | 69+34 = 103 |
| 5 | Calculate the check digit. The smallest integer which needs to be added to the result from step 4 in order to produce a multiple of 10. | 103 + 7 = 110, so check digit is 7 |
