Basics: Creating a smiley

Objective

Create a smiley face Note: This is probably not the most efficient way to produce a smiley face but does illustrate many basic features of Paintshop Pro 5.


Create new file

p5fnew.gif (4257 bytes) 1. Select file new (or p5tb_new.gif (845 bytes)), set properties as;


Using the shape tool - control palette & color selector

2. p5tb_sh.gif (916 bytes) Select the shape icon on the toolbar, then show the control dialog by clicking on the "toggle control palette" button, and  Set Shape, style and outline width as shown.

3. Double click on the foreground colour selector to bring up the colour picker, choose red from the basic colours (notice the cursor changes to an eye dropper). Click [Ok] once colour is selected

Using the shape tool - drawing the circles

p5b01_a.gif (2008 bytes) 4. Move the cursor to the center of the image window. Click and drag to form a circle as shown.
p5b01_b.gif (2013 bytes) 5. Using the colour picker and control dialog (to change the circle style to filled) to produce the two eyes;


Completing the smiley

  1. To produce a mouth we will first create a new image file. (File New or p5tb_new.gif (845 bytes))
  2. Draw a circle of suitable size
  3. Cut out the lower portion
  4. Use [Ctrl]+[T] to select just the mouth
  5. Use [Ctrl]+[C] to copy the mouth to the clipboard
  6. Click on the face image
  7. Use [Ctrl]+[E] to paste the selection and position the mouth appropriately.
  8. Add some hair using the Airbrush
  9. Now cut out the image as close as you can to get rid of the surrounding white margins
  1. Use [Ctrl]+[C] then  [Ctrl]+[V] to create a new image
  2. Use save to save as a psp file.
  3. 15. Since a Gif file can only be 256 colours reduce colour depth (use standard to avoid speckling)
  4. 12. Since we want this on a web page we want the background to be transparent
  5. 12a. [Ctrl]+[T] to get the transparent dialog box, select background, the [Ok]
  6. 12b. to see how the transparency works select colours | Show transparancy or [Shift] +[V]
  7. 14. Use file save as to save as gif file.
