Personal Oracle 8: Starting & Stopping the database

Starting the database

Before you use Oracle you should start up the Oracle database server. This provides the underlying software to allow you to interact with your databases.
  • To start up the Oracle 8 database server
    • Select [Start] | Programs | Oracle8 Personal Edition | Start Database.
    • The following messages will appear
      • Starting up Database
      • Checking Security..
      • Oracle8 Instance started
      • Database mounted
      • Oracle8 Database Started Successfully.

 

Stopping the database

 

Before you shut down your computer you need to shutdown the database server. This completes any outstanding updates and closes the datafiles.
  • To shutdown the Oracle 8 database server
    • Select [Start] | Programs | Oracle8 Personal Edition | Start Database. or
      • right mouse click on the Oracle database icon t the bottom of the desktop, and select stop database.
    • The following messages will appear
      • Checking security...
      • Shutting down the database
      • Database dismounted
      • Oracle8 Database Is Shutdown.
