  • You should check networking settings to make sure appropriate drivers are available to connect to you Internet Service Provider (ISP)
  • Start | Settings | Control Panel
  • Select Network

  • Network options:
    • Note:
      • If you are connected to a network
        TCP/IP -> Dial up adaptor
        might be shown in Network | Configuration.
    • Additional network components may be installed
      For example
      • Microsoft Family Logon -When Windows98 starts, MS Family Logon displays a list of users with access to this computer.
      • Personal Web Server - if this is installed.
  • Dial-up adaptor properties
    • Driver Type:
      Enhanced mode (32bit and 16bit NDIS driver)
    • Bindings
      TCP/IP
    • Advanced: (* = Win98)
      *Enable Point to Point IP: Yes
      *IP Packet Size: Automatic
        Record Log File: No
        Use IPX header compression YES
      *VPN media type : Modem
  • TCP/IP Properties
    • If it doesn't exist install using
      Add | Protocol | Microsoft | TCP/IP.
    • Windows98: In most cases the properties are unique to the specific network you are calling. For this reason it is better to set TCP/IP properties in each connection icon (eg. Xtra, voyager) which calls a network. See Dial-up networking.
    • Windows95: The following settings are pretty standard.
      • Gateway: Blank
      • WINS Configuration: Disable WINS Resolution
      • IP Address: Obtain IP address automatically
      • Bindings: Blank
      • Advanced: None
      • DNS Configuration: Diable DNS
